Investigating Students’ Speaking Confidence On Al-Amin English Club (AEC)

Abstract

This research aims to explores the students’ perspectives about the Al-Amin English Club (AEC) as an English learning platform in STKIP Al-Amin Indramayu on their self-confidence of Speaking English. This research uses a qualitative method, with a pehenomenology approach. The research was conducted at Al-Amin English Club (AEC), one of the student platforms at STKIP Al-Amin Indramayu, West Java. The researcher took five informants to explore information about this platform in depth. The sample was taken from representatives of semester two, four and six of the English education department who play an active role on this platform. This research used observation, interview and documentation to collect data. The researcher went directly to find out the actual field conditions. This research focuses on exploring the perspectives of Al-Amin English Club (AEC) members to find out the role of this platform on students' self-confidence. The results showed that Al-Amin English Club (AEC) has learning activities that are relevant to the development of students' confidence in English. Because the activities in this platform tend to be interactive and stimulate students to practice speaking English. Furthermore, based on students' perspectives, this platform has a positive role on students' confidence. Students feel more confident in speaking English when participating in this activity. Students recognised that activities such as drama, discussions, sharing and presentations as well as games made students' speaking more honed and improved. In addition, the supportive friendship environment is also one of the stimuli for students to continue to be motivated in learning English, especially in Al-Amin English Club (AEC). Moreover, the more relaxed and casual learning atmosphere makes students more comfortable to participating in the learning process of Al-Amin English Club (AEC).
