Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the interaction   effects of   teaching techniques and learning styles on students’ speaking skill, determine the effects of teaching techniques on students’ speaking skill, determine the effects of learning styles  that were taught by role play and filling information gap (both are communicative language teaching) to the students with different learning styles. The research method used was experimental one. Sample size of 60 students consist of 30  for experimental class and 30 for control class taken from SMP 15 and SMP 16 in Cirebon, West Java, and the sampling technique is cluster sampling. Research instrument used were  the test to distinguish  students’ learning styles in the form of preferential test (30 items) and speaking skill in the form of oral test (5 items), that have  been tested valid and reliable with coefficient of reliability at 0.974 and 0.732. The research uses two-ways ANOVA test. The result showed. 1). There is a significant effect of teaching techniques on students’ speaking skill, as Sig = 0.000 < 0.05 and Fobserved = 35.576. 2). There is a significant effect of learning styles on students’ speaking skill as Sig = 0.014 < 0.05 and Fobserved 4.634. 3). There are significant effects of teaching techniques and learning styles on students’ speaking skill as Sig = 0.035 < 0.05 and Fobserved = 3.572. 4). The group of students with visual learning style would achieve more in speaking skill compared to other groups of learning style if taught by using role play technique. The result contribute more to be the increasing of students’ speaking skill.
